What are the explicit and implicit intentions behind the existence of an exhibition of past works or a staging of a retrospective exhibition, whether it be of artists or influential figures supported by institutions of varying levels?
If it is a display of dominance from cultural institutions or the artists themselves as gatekeepers of what is considered of cultural value, then where is the educational value in that which reinforces the pre-existing hegemony?
These acts no matter it be of the production of objects or the displaying of them becomes an aestheticization of politics, of an apparatus which advances the cultural capital of those who are in power. This work acknowledges its own shortcomings, unable to bring out change in the system that it critiques. It is but a way to insert itself into the discourse, to find a way to have one’s own retrospective in an easy, quick, affordable, and provoking way.
